About

Commissioned  by Scottsdale Public Art for the City of Scottsdale’s 60th anniversary, This Much I Know explores how the history of a place is comprised from the stories of those who live and experience it.  This project will engage the public by recording stories from resident’s experiences of Scottsdale, AZ through artist initiated conversations.  These conversations will be recorded and posted on this site as well as being available at the IN FLUX store front location at Marshall Way and 5th Ave in downtown Scottsdale.  The lead artist, Maggie Leininger, will engage residents by traveling to a variety of locations throughout Scottsdale on foot and public transit as she explores the geographical and sociological terrain within the city limits.  In addition to recording these personalized responses, Maggie Leininger will also produce a knitted banner with the words “This Much I Know” incorporated into the fabric.  The artist will produce hand-spun and naturally dyed fibers from local plants to further emphasize the relational identity and knowledge of a place.  The goal of the project is to knit a band that is the length traveled on foot as a record keeper of this experience.  Viewers will also be able to follow along on the progress of the artist’s travels as she will wear a constructed e-textile that houses a GPS locational device. Maps of each day’s trek will be posted onto this blog daily from May 12-June 25. Participants can also attend any or all of the events that will take place at the store front location as the artist spins and knits. Come and tell your story, or as a common idiom puts it, spin your yarn about Scottsdale at any of the following dates listed in the calendar!
